The first time these rivals met was on May 28th 1888 at Celtic park were the home team won 5-2. This old firm derby is one of the oldest in the world and these two Glasgow giants are the most successful in Scottish football but that is not the only reason there is strong hatred for one another. The two clubs are largely concentrated in Glasgow and have huge support throughout the world in towns and cities which makes these two clubs successful and popular. The main difference between these clubs and why they have history is because of there religious status, Rangers being Protestant and Celtic being catholic.
In my opinion Scottish football has died for some years now with no real excitement with Rangers getting relegated to division 3. Celtic may have been happy with the decision but to be honest it has killed the top tier of Scottish football with no real competition involved.
Rangers and Celtic have played each other 399 times, Rangers winning 159 and Celtic 144 also 96 draws.
Rangers have won the league title 54 times, the Scottish cup 33 times and the league cup 27 times.
Celtic have won the league title 45 times, the Scottish cup 36 times and the league cup 14 times.
